Hi. Peter from the Netherlands here. I've just signed in and have a question.

Many words are written and said about the two chords Dewey Bunnel uses on A horse with no name. But clearly Gerry Beckley is playing completely different chords as seen on this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5SeY99CtYPU and on this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ocLCLMZO6dc

These chords make the whole sound of this song much deeper and interesting. Any idea which ones the are?

In the seventies I was cruising along the French Riviera where I played and sang in several restaurants. These days we only had small casette recorders to find out how to play songs and with two other guitar playing friends we tried to find out which chords all band members used.

Not successfully...

Cheers Peter

Hi Peter, great question. The original version of Horse With No Name uses something other than standard tuning. I believe it was DEDGBD. With that tuning your chords are Em (202002) and D6/9 (020202). I haven't had a chance to check out those videos yet. But I will take a look when I get a chance. I love how America has open strings ringing out all over the place on a lot of songs. Great acoustic music.

Hi Paul. I’ll wait and hear what you think about these chords.

In the live video I see a 12 string with a capo on the second fret. The fingerings look like (020032) and (2X0200) in standard tuning. It sounds all right to me, but definitely better on a 12 string.
